L

ast time I flew into Christchurch from overseas I was greeted with an air bridge featuring all-over imagery of a native forest in Fiordland, accompanied by distinctive birdsong and scents – it immediately reminded me of a moment in time trekking the Hollyford Track. There are a number of themed air bridges including the Mackenzie Night Sky, the West Coast, Kaikoura, Abel Tasman, Fiordland, a Canterbury sheep farm, the Mackenzie country and a Marlborough vineyard. Visitors walk from their planes through the air bridges and apparently many go directly to the travel information desk to ask how to get to the place they've just sampled! It has just been announced that the Chinese New Year sparked a big jump in visitors from China in February, in fact the numbers doubled on February last year and total visitor arrivals are up 14 percent (hitting 343,500) compared to the same time last year. Given that the increase of visitors from China has been influenced by the timing of Chinese New Year, which is a popular time to travel, and the fact that this year is the Chinese Year of the Sheep, I am sure Christchurch Airport would have rolled out the Canterbury sheep farm bridge along with the associated sounds of baaing and, I guess, the scents of the farmyard! Whilst charming for the Chinese, I can only imagine the jokes the bridge evokes from Aussie arrivals, and I have to say that one time when I arrived to the sheep bridge I felt like I was being herded into a pen. But good on the airport for the bold variety of themed bridges, they certainly get people talking and their first impressions of the country are no doubt ones of intrigue. Charter flights from China arriving in February were also very popular, and as visitors walked into the specially decorated terminal they were welcomed with performances by the Christchurch Pops Choir and the opportunity to have a photo taken with a Canterbury sheep! The Year of the Sheep (or goat or ram as it is variously named) is a favourite year for the Chinese, sheep being among the animals that they like most. Sheep are, they say, gentle and calm, useful for their fleece, soft, white and cute. Chinese astrologists say the Year of the Sheep follows a tumultuous Year of the Horse, and heralds a calmer atmosphere. Apparently last year was the Horse's year to gallop and take off, and this year will be the year for contemplating and appreciating what has already been accomplished; to think about bringing goodness to others, to take a deep breath and calmly look at what's ahead. A steady path, generosity, and keeping the peace are this year's mantra, they say.

Think about it…

“Eagles fly alone, but sheep flock together.” – Polish proverb

The New Zealand Dance Company's Australasian tour of Rotunda is coming to the Air Force Museum in Christchurch on Friday 27 March.

F

eaturing the New Zealand Army Band, Rotunda is a tribute to the Centenary of the WW1 ANZAC landing at Gallipoli. Created by the company's Artistic Director and Arts Laureate Shona McCullagh in collaboration with NZDC dancers and celebrated singer, songwriter and composer Don McGlashan as Musical Director, Rotunda is a beautiful collision of a live brass band with the raw power of contemporary dance. After Christchurch the tour continues on to Dunedin, before concluding its Auckland season on Anzac Day at the Aotea Centre with North Shore Brass. The tour then continues across the Tasman throughout May, with performances in Adelaide, Melbourne, Parramatta and Geelong. Full ticketing information is available at www.nzdc.org.nz.

The concept was conceived by cycling enthusiast Jeff Fulton from The Vines Village, a bike-friendly destination set among surrounding Marlborough cellar doors and surrounded by straight flat roads. “We are working as a collective of neighbouring cellar doors, accommodation and bike hire businesses to actively promote the Rapaura/Renwick area as a cycle friendly destination. We are all open 12 months of the year. As Marlborough is consistently one of the top recipients of maximum annual sunshine hours we see winter cycling as an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the province, Fulton said. Bikes can be hired from businesses on site at The Vines Village and range from BMX's to euro-cruisers.

OUT & ABOUT

An exciting year ahead By Rachel Smith

The year is set to be an exciting one for The Russley Village. The Russley will be rolling out their new apartment complexes, beginning with the three storey Rolleston complex in May.

T

“This his is setting a new benchmark for apartment living in Christchurch,” says Nola Lamb, with the spacious apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms. Spaciousness is key in the apartments, and for all residential areas at The Russley Village. The living spaces are warm, light and generously sized, as are the bedrooms and bathrooms. Careful thought has been put into the selection of designs to allow each home to suit individual needs, with third bedroom spaces easily used as either an office or an additional living space. They also all have outdoor space, be it a balcony or garden area, with underground parking and storage facilities. “Demand has been strong for the apartments, with only a limited number available,” says Nola. Many residents will be moving in as soon as the Rolleston complex is completed in May, with the adjoining Bealey complex set to open at the end of October.

Nola likens the planned Russley Homestead, which will be under construction during the year, to that of a Country Club. It will provide the ideal space for social gatherings, including a dining area, bar, library, sports room, a wellness centre, and a cinema on the second floor - it will also be directly linked with the apartment complexes. Nola greets residents by name as she walks through the village. There are smiles on all the faces as residents enjoy a relaxed stroll through the award winning garden, perhaps stopping to work in the community vegetable garden or for a chat with friends. Nola suggests this is the best way to experience what The Russley Village has to offer – to view the luxurious apartments and take a leisurely wander through the gardens for yourself. Contact The Russley Village on (03) 982 8280 or visit them on www.russleyvillage.co.nz for more information.

FIVE MINUTES by Angela Bennett

five minutes with Phillip Johnston N

ew Zealand Army Band Master – Staff Sergeant Phillip Johnston who was born in Christchurch, brought up in Blenheim and once again lives in Christchurch, has achieved the title of Champion Bb Bass Player of New Zealand 20 times, and the coveted Brass Bands Association of New Zealand Champion of Champions soloist three times in his playing career. He was also awarded first place at the prestigious Ern Kellar International Brass Musician of the Year. Many Cantabrians will remember his superb performance playing Flight of the Bumble Bee on EB Bass at the 2013 Classical Sparks and others may have seen him as far afield as the Edinburgh Tattoo, the International Defence Exhibition in Abu Dhabi and the Rugby World Cup campaign in various stadiums around New Zealand in 2011 as the Drum Major of the NZ Army Band. I caught up with this talented man to find out a little more about his musical career and what's involved in being a Band Master…

How old were you when you discovered your love of music and when did you first join a brass band? I was about seven when I first remember picking up a brass instrument. My father was the musical director of the local band (Blenheim Municipal, now Marlborough District Brass). Where did you envisage your musical talents would take you in terms of career? Ever since I was knee high to a grasshopper I always envisaged myself joining the NZ Army band. Although this did not happen initially as they did not have any vacancies. I then decided to join the Royal NZ Navy band. Once a vacancy became available I transferred into the Army band. 10 March 26, 2015 Metropol

What does a Band Master do? The Bandmaster's job is to train the band, ensuring they are performing to the highest standard. Managing 36 musicians can be quite challenging, as this includes not only musicianship, but also career and personal development, welfare and military requirements.

What instruments do you play and why did you focus on those choices? I learnt to play the cornet when I was seven, then I progressively moved to larger instruments like the Flugel Horn, Tenor Horn then Bb Tuba. My father played the Bb Tuba and my brother who is also in the Army Band plays it. When did you join the NZ Army and in what capacity? After completing my three months' naval basic training in Devonport in 1996, I joined the Royal NZ Navy band before transferring into the NZ Army Band in 1997. Who has inspired you in your somewhat unusual career? I have many people who have inspired me. When I first started playing, my father did for sure. Then as I moved away from Blenheim down to Christchurch before joining the Defence Force: Ken Smith (Musical Director of Woolston Brass in the '90s) and Kevin Jarrett (Musical Director of the National Band of NZ multiple times) had big impacts on my musical career.

The NZ Army Band is classed as one of the best in the world how do you come up with the quirky moves and inspirational performances that are its signature trademark? I would like to take credit for our marching displays but this is our Drum Major's job. Everyone has the opportunity to put forward their ideas to him and he will either go with them or not. As you can imagine there are always plenty of ideas thrown into the mix. Our DM has the job of putting the choreography together. The band has an international reputation as one of the finest marching bands in the world, how much time do you put in to rehearsing for an event? When rehearsing for a marching display we can spend up to six hours a day five days a week preparing. The band prides itself on its worldwide reputation and does not take it for granted. Which are some of your stand out performances and why? There are so many… performing at the Edinburgh military Tattoo four times. Being selected for four National Bands of NZ and participating at various festivals and championships around the world. Conducting the NZ Army Band's 50th anniversary concert last year, plus many more.

ROTUNDA IS VERY MOVING, WITH WORLD CLASS DANCERS AND GREAT MUSIC. IF YOU GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE SHOW, YOU SHOULDN'T MISS IT FOR THE WORLD.

How many musicians are in the NZ Army Band and how many different instruments are played? There are 36 members in the NZ Army Band and there are up to 18 instruments involved in the band. What is your favourite genre of music to perform? I enjoy listening to all types of music - jazz, swing, pop, orchestral and brass music as I believe this is an important part in being a musician. The New Zealand Army Band is next performing at Rotunda in Christchurch, a tribute to the Centenary of the WW1 ANZAC landing at Gallipoli, what do you have in store for the audience? The Rotunda show is something very, very special. I had never been exposed to contemporary dance before. All I can say is it is very moving, with world class dancers and great

music. If you get the opportunity to see the show, you shouldn't miss it for the world. On a more personal note, if you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Take all the opportunities presented to you and try to have as few regrets as possible. What were you doing the last time the thought went through your mind, “I shouldn't be doing this”? I would rather not say. As you grow older, you grow wiser!

What would you like to see in the 'new' Christchurch? A space that we can enjoy as a family. A world class auditorium and a multipurpose international sports complex similar to QEII. What one book would you encourage everyone to read? All Blacks Don't Cry by John Kirwan. What is one thing that Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I have a huge passion for golf. I try and get out as often as possible.

What is your proudest achievement? Proudest moment – having my two wonderful daughters. After that being part of the wonderful NZ Army Band.

What are you like at parties? I love social gatherings and I enjoy the opportunity to meet new people.

Which is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in Canterbury? Coffee Culture, Colombo Street.

What's next on the wish list? My wish is for my daughters Bailey and Zoe to grow up and fulfil their ambitions.

More to Tai Tapu than There's more to Tai Tapu than meets the eye when you're driving through to Akaroa.

O

n the way, many people are familiar with the Rossendale winery, while the Raspberry Café and berry farm is another popular stopover place, but there is more going on around Tai Tapu itself that can keep you there for several hours. Admittedly, I had not stopped off at Tai Tapu since the earthquakes, so it seemed a rather special occasion to go there recently for the opening of the Christmas Curiosity Cabinet art exhibition at the Longueville Gallery.

Rossendale Restaurant & Winery

“WORD'S GOT OUT THAT WE DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN ART AT OUR ECLECTIC, WIDERANGING GALLERY.”

Longueville Gallery The wide range of quirky art on exhibition there included work by Demamia Lloyd Harris, Blanche Fryer and Katrina Perano. What really surprised me, however, was the large number of interesting people who had managed to make their way to this out-of-theway gallery, at 82 Otahuna Road, that evening. It was a real pleasure to have a chat to people like Donna Demente, whose work is also included in the exhibition, and who had travelled all the way from Oamaru; 15-year-old artist extraordinaire Henry Turner, who was there with his mother; metal sculptor David Lloyd; and even the Wizard of New Zealand and Alice. I could not resist asking the Longueville Gallery owners, Sharon and Ian Ovenden, how

12 March 26, 2015 Metropol

Ian and Sharon Ovenden all these people had managed to know about the exhibition. “It's a matter of getting the right people in the right place. We've got an extremely interesting bunch of artists who exhibit here,” said Sharon. “Word's got out that we do something different in art at our eclectic, wide-ranging gallery, and we certainly do as well as other

art galleries. “It's a lot of fun. Why would we do it otherwise? It's important now that we have a bit of fun with our work. We get all sorts of people here and children also love to come here.” (Sharon uses the word, “fun”, remarkably often during conversation.) The appeal to children is reflected in the annual Art of Courage fund-raiser for the Child Cancer Foundation, which was recently held at the gallery. Artists donate original works to the event, which are then offered for sale through a $100 voucher system. The purchased vouchers are given to children between the ages of 4 and 14, who then make their own choice from the art work on offer. This is a child-only event, with no parents allowed in during the selection process. “The idea of children choosing their preferred piece using instinct only and with no concept of the investment value of certain artists appealed to me,” said Sharon. Longueville Gallery also holds art classes and has a gift shop filled with art-related goods ranging from pottery to wooden bowls, paintings and sculptures of birds and animals, bags and coloured boots.

Lansdown House There's also a lot of other fun that can be had around Tai Tapu. The Raspberry CafĂŠ is the starting place for 3/4-hour walks around this beautiful district. Many cyclists also get off the main road there, ride through the surrounding landscape, often ending up at The Store cafe, in central Tai Tapu, for a revival coffee. Opposite The Store is Obelisk, with a wide range of solid home goods, ranging from heavy teak doors to architectural windows, sideboards, tables and candelabras. Not far away is bridal-wear designer Louise

Anderson; the Tai Tapu Carriage Company; The Company Shed, for gardenware and gifts. Tai Tapu artists include Jan Chaffey, Annabel Menzies-Joyce and Simon Kelly. Other places of interest include the Tai Tapu Library, which is recognised as a Building of National Significance; while both the Otahuna Lodge and the Frensham Gardens have been designated Gardens of National Significance. Named after a classic red rose, the Frensham country garden flows around a mellow brick residence in a sequence of carefully thought-out space. Broad steps lead

Tai Tapu Library up and out to lawns, relaxed colourful borders and a fine collections of trees, providing layers of light and shade to explore. There is certainly sufficient going on around Tai Tapu to keep you entertained for the best part of a day.

Screen classics Putting spectacular cinema classics onto spectacular cinema screens is one of the great pleasures of the organisers of the New Zealand International Film Festival. Every winter they relish the challenge of breaking out the new. Walt Disney's Pinocchio and two very different Kubrick epics – Spartacus and 2001: A Space Odyssey – are coming to us in freshly minted studio digital transfers, while new digital restorations give us the best possible reason to celebrate A Hard Day's Night and Bertolucci's ravishing The Conformist. NZIFF Autumn Events in Christchurch will screen across three weekends in May at Hoyts Riccarton, starting on Saturday 2 May. For more information: www.nziff.co.nz.

OUT & ABOUT

Exciting line-up for local theatre This year marks Elmwood Players' 20th year in their current venue, the Elmwood Auditorium in Merivale, although they have been part of the community theatre scene since the late 1940s. The society prides itself in offering a variety of quality productions to Christchurch audiences. Current president Garry Thomas says, “We stage three adult productions and a children's production each year, along with a season of one-act plays that are also entered into the NZ Theatre Federation short play festival”.

T

his year Elmwood Players will also be offering acting and directing workshops, facilitated by professional tutors. “We provided such workshops a few years back, and they have been very successful,” says Thomas. “It's all part of offering something to the community, and opportunities for those wanting to get involved in theatre.” And a new venture is also on the cards for this year, with a musical showcase that is currently in the early planning stages for Show Weekend. Following their successful first production this year “The Owl And The Pussycat”, the rest

of the year's productions have been finalised, with two dramas “The Hen Night Epiphany” and “Proof”; an adult comedy “Sex Cells” and a season of one acts “Some Like It Short”. The Hen Night Epiphany is the NZ premiere of an award winning play by Irish playwright Jimmy Murphy. When bride-to-be Una drags her two friends, her future mother-in-law and her fiancé's godmother to her newly purchased run-down shack (only 80 minutes from Dublin) for her hen night, an evening of bickering and revelation is on the cards. Murphy's script rests on this all-female dynamic to act as a vehicle

to tackle some of life's big issues. The real heart of the play isn't the overtly obvious subjects of abuse, promiscuity or relationship troubles, but the deep-rooted issues of loyalty, betrayal and acceptance. The Hen Night Epiphany plays at the Elmwood Auditorium, 31 Aikmans Rd, Merivale, 8 to 11 and 15 to 18 April (Wednesday to Saturday) at 7:30pm. Tickets: $20 waged/$17 unwaged. Embroidered and French jacquard jackets with a bohemian feel are another staple that can transform a simple outfit. Make sure you keep the cut simple and select accessories carefully so the look is not overpowering. Sophisticated bombers and urban long length leathers are also on trend options. Back in the '20s light duster coats or housecoats were popular. Lightweight and longlined they are a great option to add a layer and create a sleek silhouette. Emerging designers in Canterbury Fashion Week “We are delighted to incorporate into Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week (CFBW) this year an Emerging Designers competition,” says Denyse Saunders, founder and director of CFBW. “Secondary and tertiary students will show their creations alongside established designers and fashion retailers at the prestigious, world class, Canterbury Collections on Friday17 April at The Tannery.”

T

“The he theme is Illuminating Fashion, in keeping with our association with Science Alive Celebration of Light and the worldwide organisation UNESCO, which we are extremely proud to be associated with this year,” explains Ms Saunders. “We are also raising funds to support UNESCO at the Canterbury Collections as they do so much for so many.” Secondary Students are able to create an entire garment or recycle fashion with the use of lights sewn into the garments in either the Contemporary Fashion section or the Avant-garde section. While the tertiary students will have their own three categories to choose from: Contemporary Fashion, Avant-garde or Body Art and Creative Fashion, all incorporating lighting into their creations. The finalists will show their creations as part of the Canterbury Collections, the highlight of CFBW 2015. “We are very excited about these categories and can't wait to see what they come up with. It will add to an already spectacular show at The Tannery,” says Ms Saunders. “The winners of each section will be announced on the night and judged by some experienced fashion industry representatives.” Designers and retailers that have been chosen to show at CFBW this season are: Alchemy Equipment, Annah Stretton, Clockwork Emporium, Ingrid Brook, Kilt, Melodie. It is fortunate then for the shopaholics, slaves to seasonal trends, lovers of fabulous food, furnishings and fineries, and even the conservative buyers, that The Tannery's owner Alasdair Cassel's saw such tremendous potential in this vintage spot and has worked tirelessly to help it undergo a metamorphosis of epic proportions. Held at Belle interiors on Victoria Street, the Lynn Woods Fashion Show presented many top international labels including Day Birger et Mikkelsen, Camilla and Marc, and Paul and Joe little sister. It was a night of fun displaying Lynn's ambition to satisfy every customer's needs. There were many pieces to take you from workplace to night life...

L

ynn Woods has recently had a change in direction with fresh new labels in time for winter. The show was a classy evening where simplistic styling made garments look sharp such as black pants, white shirt, jacket and boots - which are still essential looks for 2015. Trelise Cooper showed some beautiful winter coats with a diverse range of styles. There was lots of knitwear, and cashmere jumpers from Cable Melbourne, Carlson, Paul and Joe Little Sister and Standard Issue. Many sheer layering pieces can be worn with every collection in store such as the grey 'bubble trouble' cardigan teamed with a layering top with black pants and boots. There were many vibrant coloured dresses with sequinned patterns, and dresses that were simple in colours, such as camel teamed with a red scarf giving you that business style look which can be teamed with a great pair of heels or a sleek pair of black ankle boots. A Cooper wall pleat floral dress looked beautiful with camel ankle boots for those warm autumn sunny days.

Fashion reinvents this season This winter, fashion is paying homage to the best styles from some of the best decades. Trends have been picked apart and reinvented to offer a myriad of classic and creative looks for the season, and delightful boutique Viva La Moda showcases the cream of the crop.

VIVA LA MODA HAS BEEN MAKING ITS MARK ON CANTERBURY'S FASHION SCENE, WITH THANKS TO OWNER KIM TAYLOR'S ENVIABLE EYE FOR STYLE.

V

iva La Moda is situated in the growing township of Rolleston. Since opening three years ago it has been making its mark on Canterbury's fashion scene, with thanks to owner Kim Taylor's enviable eye for style. “I always try to have plenty of colour amongst the staple black, charcoal and neutral pieces, so there isn't that feeling of winter fashion being drab and there are always new things arriving in,” says Kim. New stock is ying in just as quickly as it's

ying out. Customers are so excited by the collections that they use Viva La Moda's facebook page, which posts the latest arrivals, to get in early and pre-order pieces before they have sold out in store. Kim is excited to announce that several new labels have graced the shelves, perhaps the most popular among them being Ketz-Ke, designed in New Zealand to seam harmoniously with the New Zealand lifestyle. Also new this winter is Fever of London, boasting feminine cuts and silhouettes in the form of angora cardigans and woollen dresses, as well as new-to-the-scene Charlo, the sister label of the ever popular Augustine which is

due to arrive in any day. They join “old favourites” like Pink Ruby and ArtStyle, denim maestros Vassalli, who offer a range of pants for ultimate comfort, the dark and edgy Vargo, as well as European labels Dolce Vita and Sao Paulo, to name but a few. With such a variety of labels comes a variety of looks. Whether it's in the form of prints and patterns, fur vests and cable knits, customers will walk out feeling condently chic. Quite simply, Viva La Moda has every fashion need covered, with a range of footwear and accessories to boot. Follow them on Facebook or visit them in person at Rolleston Square. www.vivalamoda.co.nz.

Advances in vein treatments Peter Laws is a local specialist vascular surgeon and varicose vein specialist. He talked to Metropol about a new and novel technique that has recently become available in New Zealand to treat varicose veins…

DOES FEWER INJECTIONS, LESS PAIN AND NO STOCKINGS SOUND LIKE WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR WITH YOUR VARICOSE VEINS TREATMENT?

Peter Laws

V

aricose veins are known to produce symptoms of “Varicose aching, swelling and discomfort and may lead to ulceration, phlebitis and bleeding. Not surprisingly we've seen an increase in the use of endo-venous thermoablation techniques (minimally invasive heating) including laser therapy and radiofrequency. One of these techniques - the Venefit TM procedure - uses the VNUS Closure catheter and has repeatedly demonstrated less pain, bruising and reduced return to work times when compared to some other techniques.

Metropol asked why the need for another procedure if it's no more than equivalent to established techniques. What's the benefit? Peter explained that other techniques whilst performed under local anaesthetic require tumescent anaesthesia (surrounding the vein in local anaesthetic). This means a small number of local injections in the thigh to numb the vein. In the case of Venaseal this is simply not necessary. Moreover other techniques require compression stockings to be worn, sometimes for weeks following the procedure. With Venaseal because the glue has a rapid onset, the vein is sealed almost immediately. So stockings are not necessary at all. So does fewer injections, less pain and no stockings sound like what you are looking for with your varicose veins treatment? If you want to know more check out Peter's website at www.veinsnz.com or make an appointment by calling (03) 365 4502.

But what of the future? A new technique, known as “VenasealTM , has recently been introduced to this country. It uses a well-established medical grade cyano-acrylate glue to seal the vein from the inside. This revolutionary idea, that I was the first to perform in New Zealand, has passed feasibility and safety studies with over 2,000 cases performed worldwide. The first randomised control trial demonstrates closure rates, improved quality of life and pain scores equivalent to radiofrequency thermoablation”.

Supporting world-class medical research The Canterbury Medical Research Foundation has been supporting and enabling world-class medical research for more than 50 years and in that time has granted over $22 million in research funding.

T

he Foundation endeavours to provide a well-balanced folio of research, from basic science in the laboratory, to translational research at the clinic coalface. The Foundation’s subsidiary company, The New Zealand Brain Research Institute also based in Christchurch, concentrates on unlocking answers to common diseases of the brain, such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, dementia, multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s Disease and stroke. The Foundation undertook a large scale operational review in 2014 and one of the key learnings to come out of this was the realisation that many people in Canterbury were unaware of the Foundation’s work or that the Brain Research Institute even existed. Therefore in February this year, the Foundation re-launched itself with a new look and logo for both entities, that clearly speaks of the close partnership between them and showcases the type of research that Foundation grants enable.

ONE OF THE KEY FOCI FOR THE FOUNDATION IS SUPPORTING EMERGING OR YOUNG RESEARCHERS TO ENSURE THEY GET THE BEST START BY BEING A PART OF GREAT PROJECTS, UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF WORLDCLASS SENIOR RESEARCHERS.

One of the key foci for the Foundation is supporting emerging or young researchers early on in their careers, to ensure they get the best start by being a part of great projects, under the supervision of world-class senior researchers. They do this through fellowships, summer studentships and scholarships that nurture the immense research talent we have right here in Canterbury. The Foundation has strong links with Canterbury and Otago universities, as well as with the Medical School, CPIT and The Burwood Academy. It supports students from all these academic institutions to become members of research teams all over the city. Students are given the opportunity to work at the Brain Research Institute on projects that have international significance, such as the Parkinson’s project currently underway under the supervision of well-known Canterbury Neurologist, Professor Tim Anderson, who treats many Parkinson’s patients from all over the region. The Foundation hopes to grow its donor database in 2015 to ensure that its important support of researchers in Canterbury can continue well into the future. 36 March 26, 2015 Metropol

Chic shoes to fall for Shoes, glorious shoes! With apologies to the words of the song from the musical Oliver, but for some of us shoes are just as delicious and irresistible as food is. We can certainly indulge in that temptation at the wonderful shop in Rangiora called Rangiora Shoe Lines, where many of the lines are sourced exclusively by them from all over the world. Here you definitely can find shoes that are different and that make real statements.

MIZ MOOZ MINX EJECT EL

N

ew autumn and winter stock is arriving daily. Boots are still a la mode, but this season it is short ankle boots that are to the fore, in colours other than black and with interesting trims and textures. From the Eject range made in Portugal, comes a truly innovative ankle boot with ribbon laces and a stacked rubber heel. It's available in turquoise and off-white. Rangiora Shoe Lines also stock Eject's weekend lace-up casual range in unbelievably soft leather and a variety of colo urs from reddish orange to tan. Bussola of Italy makes a mid-calf flat-heeled boot with straps that has a distinctly country look – strong and comfortable and perfect for winter walks. It comes in grey suede and taupe suede. Rangiora Shoe Lines also loves the Minx range designed by New Zealander

Cushla Reed. Minx's boots are funky and edgy with spots, stripes and fun colour combinations. The Flashy Nashy design comes in black pony leather with white spots and gusseted sides. The Milo Mod design comes in either green floral or pink floral. In stock too is a Minx lace-up chunky-heeled shoe in black suede with a black and white textured trim. Add in a Minx duffel shoulder bag in either watermelon, cobalt blue or denim blue and you are truly set for winter. The team at Rangiora Shoe Lines will be happy to help you find the right boots or shoes to brighten up your winter. They are the experienced experts. Find them at 162 High Street, Rangiora. Stars of early childhood care It's immediately obvious how passionate they are about high-quality early childhood education at the Sovereign Star Nursery and Preschool in Kaiapoi. The owners have designed and built a brand-new specific-topurpose, light, bright and airy facility full of wonderful resources and equipment. There is enough, and more, to keep children occupied and learning for all the time they are on-site. In addition there is a superb outdoor environment offering a variety of fun, exciting and natural, yet safe spaces for imaginative play.

CHILDREN'S DEVELOPMENT IS FOSTERED HOLISTICALLY, BY NURTURING THEIR PHYSICAL, INTELLECTUAL, EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS.

L

ocated at the Sovereign Palms subdivision this early childhood centre acknowledges that each child's life journey is unique. They respect each child in their care as an individual with personal rights. Working in partnership with children's families the programmes the centre provides are designed to create an environment which supports and encourages each child's

potential. They want them to reach for the stars and that's embodied in their name – Sovereign Star. The Sovereign Star Preschool caters for a maximum of 75 children from three months to five years old, either full-time or part-time and for affordable fees, which include morning and afternoon tea and lunch. The babies' nursery is specially designed to recreate a

calm home-like culture and the professional staff are dedicated to nurture the infants in their care. There are seven staff in total at the centre - a high ratio of teachers to children to ensure a secure place where children have the opportunity to grow and to develop a love for lifelong learning. Here children's development is fostered holistically, by nurturing their physical, intellectual, emotional and social skills. Central to this learning is music, art, dance, drama and story-telling through which children acquire verbal, perceptual, numeric, spatial and motor skills. Sovereign Star offers 20 hours of Early Childhood Education for all three and four year olds enrolled in the centre. They are open Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm. “OUR PATIENTS WANT SPECIALISTS BECAUSE THAT'S THE TOP LEVEL OF CARE.”

he team at Christchurch Obstetrics and Gynaecology Associates in Merivale have the shared expertise that is acquired through many years of experience. The practice uses a team approach, with their group of specialists working together while each brings their own unique set of skills. Founder of the practice Colin Conaghan works closely with colleague Angela Beard, with Geeta Singh also a consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Christchurch Women's Hospital, and Michelle Bailey's work with the afliated Fertility Associates tting well with the care they provide. “Our patients want specialists because that's the top level of care,” says practice manager Helen Conaghan, with self-referrals welcomed at the practice. Colin has a history of loyal patients – patients whose children were delivered by him return for their own gynaecological care, and those he delivered in turn come to him with their own pregnancies. “We always have someone who is on call for deliveries,” says Helen, with a specialist always present for the delivery itself. They also make recommendations for those who wish to have a private midwife as well, to provide support throughout the labour process and also additional post-natal care. Christchurch Obstetrics and Gynaecology Associates provide a set fee of $3,450 for all pregnancy care, the only additional costs being ultrasounds as required, with the aim of making specialist care affordable. The practice also offers a full range of specialist gynaecological services, including endoscopic surgery, hysterectomy, incontinence, menopause, menstrual disorders, pelvic pain and pelvic oor repair. Each specialist has their own private gynaecological practice, with Colin having a wealth of experience in surgery and Angela specialising in laparoscopic procedures. All surgeries are performed at either St George's Hospital or Southern Cross.

The team also provide services outside of Christchurch, with a clinic in Ashburton for obstetric and gynaecological care. Dental dream team Grahame Dutton and Christine Duxbury followed their shared passion for providing the very best quality dental care when they opened Duxton Dental.

“MY PHILOSOPHY IS PERFECTION. AS A DENTAL SURGEON I AIM TO PROVIDE OPTIMAL DENTAL CARE THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME.”

W

hen Grahame and I began Duxton Dental, in 1996, we had a vision to create a dental practice that had an environment and atmosphere that made people feel comfortable and well looked after,” says Christine. Both graduates of the University of Otago, they have extensive knowledge gained from working in a wide variety of dental practices both in New Zealand and internationally.

“My philosophy is perfection. As a dental surgeon I aim to provide optimal dental care that will stand the test of time,” says Grahame. “I believe it is our obligation to research and implement new technologies and techniques into our practice. This has meant an enormous commitment to continuing education and the purchasing of equipment to match the advancements.” All four dentists at Duxton Dental are ably assisted by their team of dental assistants. “I thoroughly enjoy assisting Grahame Dutton and now Rhonda Gooding in the surgery,” says Jewels Smith who joined the dental team in 2010. “I like being able to get to know our patients and support them throughout their procedure.” Jewels Sue Smith assists Christine and also dentist Hayley Hall, and has played an integral role in

the dental assistant team for the past 19 years. “I enjoy caring for, understanding and supporting our patients,” says Sue. “My role at Duxton Dental is to assist both Christine and Grahame and to support them in any way I Sue can in the day to day running of the practice,” says Heather O'Loughlin, who completed her training as a dental assistant 17 years ago. Heather “I love it – I have a real passion for the industry,” says Krissy Clement, who has recently returned to the practice. Krissy Sonia Perry 's welcoming

CANTERBURY BRIDAL By Kate Pierson

Rightly or wrongly, Marie Antoinette, late Dauphine of France circa 1770, has long been associated with the expression, “Qu'ils mangent de la brioche" – “Let them eat cake/brioche”, a poor taste response she allegedly delivered in reference to her French subjects who were starving.

Let them eat cake A

s fascinating as these salacious details are, the pressing question is what delicious cakes Marie Antoinette had in mind when she supposedly uttered these words. We'd take a very confident gamble and say she surely entertained the type of decadent, passionately prepared masterpieces devised, designed and prepared by Anna Worthington for her home-grown New Zealand brand Cakes by Anna. It's a no brainer really – given that Anna's cakes are all sorts of classy – they are most certainly worthy of the finely honed aristocratic palette and a definite crowd pleaser amongst the rest of us more ordinary cake lovers. Christchurch City is crushing hard on these cakes with restaurants and cafes a plenty serving up Cakes by Anna. Made from fresh, local and seasonal ingredients and the quintessentially Kiwi number eight wire – mentality that is – the Christchurch brand is fully responsible for the cake euphoria that has set in across the city as sweet tooths are seduced time and time again by flirty, charismatic and romantically dressed cake creations. Better still, Anna's cakes are nuptial winners – the only risk with such a culinary bomb shell at weddings, however, is that it may be the oh so attractive and enticing elephant in the room that no one

can quite draw their eyes away from. Cakes by Anna, baked and beautified in Anna's own commercial kitchen space, have got a lot of somethin' somethin' for everyone. From lemon cake layered and topped with tangy icing, to pear, date and salted caramel. And don't forget, the persuasive charm of the beloved Big Banoffee too, along with Lavender, Earl Grey & Blueberry, which may just make a cake monogamist out of you yet. But hey, not to worry, if you're pretty promiscuous when it comes to cake

consumption, get your ginger cake on, among others, and a peanut butter and raspberry concoction is just as worthy of your cake fixation too. Knowing and appreciating that wedding days are usually all kinds fabulous, it's therefore almost a fait accompli that your cake companion as you say “I do” should be a Cakes by Anna work of edible art. You'll thank us for it (we love Cakes By Anna kind of thanks by the way), your guests will adore you for it,

and it'd be fair to say Christchurch will be a much happier place for it. It already is Thanks to Cakes by Anna. Why? Because Anna's proving that Christchurch still has its mojo – always has, and always will. Anna promises to individualise every cake for the weddings she works with and cakes can be designed to suit all tastes, dietary requirements and budgets. She also offers gluten-free/dairy free/vegan/refined sugar free options.

RECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS

Tart it up This combination of fiery harissa paste, golden roasted pumpkin and salty feta by Emma Galloway in her recipe book My Darling Lemon Thyme is perfect with a rocket, pear and almond salad for an all-out autumn feast…

Harissa Pumpkin & Feta Tart Severs 4-6 Ingredients: Approx. 1 kg crown or butternut pumpkin, peeled and chopped into 2-3cm chunks ½ C harissa plus extra to serve 1 standard quantity savoury pastry 80-100g feta cheese, crumbled 1 egg yolk mixed with 2 teaspoons rice milk or almond milk Coriander leaves to serve Method: Preheat oven to 180C and lightly grease an oven tray. Combine pumpkin and harissa in a large bowl, mixing to thoroughly coat. Turn out onto oven tray and roast for 30-35 minutes, turning a few times during cooking, until tender and golden. Set aside to cool completely. Roll out pastry on a lightly rice-floured surface or between two sheets of baking paper to roughly 30cm round and 3mm thick. Place on a baking tray and top with the roasted pumpkin, leaving a 6cm border. Crumble feta over the top, then fold edge of the pastry to make a raised crust. Brush pastry crust with egg wash and bake for 40-45 minutes until pastry is crisp and golden. Serve hot or at room temperature, scattered with chopped coriander leaves and with extra harissa on the side.

Mary's Mixologist Boss Parkhill shares the secret behind making a sensational Devil's Token…

Boss Parkhill

How to make a Devil’s Token This drink is a Boss original inspired by the word 'kalopsia' which means “the delusion of things being more beautiful than they are”. This cocktail may look demure and harmless but its devilish bite will leave you wanting more. It looks so good and the temptation is just too much.

Glassware My personal choice for this sinful cocktail would be the Bormioli Rocco Ypsilon 125ml available from Total Food Equipment.

Recipe 30ml Absolut 30ml Rouge Vermouth 5ml Raspberry cordial Lemon peel Methodology: 1. Prepare the glassware by chilling with ice 2. Add all ingredients to a Boston Mixing Glass then fill with ice 3. Stir the ingredients then strain into prepared glassware 4. Serve and enjoy this unforgivable sin.

Addington's Vanilla Bean Cafe is one of those reliable neighbourhood cafes that just keeps on keeping on, providing consistently good food, good value and good service. Opened just before the quakes, it had a change of ownership six months ago and the new owner has continued serving the cafe's traditional specials.

There's plenty more on offer here. Soup of the day and seafood chowder served with ciabatta are also popular. “We are always complemented on our bread,” says the owner. “We get it delivered every morning from the European Bakery.” He believes cleanliness, good service and a nice environment, are what makes this roomy cafe so successful. “We also serve the best ice-cream – Killinchy Gold. Destination cafe a godsend The catch phrase of Godley Cafe is ‘just far enough away’ and, despite being just a 40 minute drive or 10 minute ferry from Christchurch, the striking cafe which stands majestically above the peninsula, really does feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

E

stablished in 2012, the cafe is a real destination and is a great drawcard for visitors from the city. “We've got a large partially covered deck which offers sea views and shelter from the easterly,” business owner Michelle Anderton – former Godley House operator – explains. “It’s a great place to sit outside and enjoy a cider or meal in the sunshine while still being protected from the wind.” A delicious selection of seasonal foods is available, cooked on site, using free range eggs and locally grown produce; even the coffee travels on the ferry from the Lyttelton Coffee Company. With a full license, you can even enjoy a glass of wine or a beer while you soak up the relaxed atmosphere. “We have a range of delicious pizzas, platters, cabinet food and breakfast options which are a popular choice over the weekends,” Michelle says. “There’s also a wide range of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan-friendly options.” The fun, friendly atmosphere makes it a great spot for group bookings, whether it’s a birthday party, engagement, or just a good ol’ fashioned Kiwi day out. “We will be releasing

From French classics like Croque Madame and fresh croissants with homemade jam, to modern favourites like blueberry pancakes and homemade toasted muesli with Greek yoghurt and honey, all dishes are prepared with the same love and attention Hao has for his family – and the customers love it. Hero-worshiped food There may have always been some elbow ribbing styled rivalry going on between Aotearoa's showiest centres – Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland – but when it came to the prospect of the hero-worshipped food icon that is Mexico setting up in Christchurch, Cantabrians were more than happy to let the other two cities send the restaurant their way.

F

or those hailing from Christchurch who had already been blessed with a Mexico feast when rendezvousing in Auckland and Wellington, there was a great deal of buzz knowing they would have their very own version of the festive restaurant. For those who hadn't been inducted into the Mexico fan club, well, they were in for a treat when it opened its doors last month. Mexico, now based on the corner of Manchester and Hereford Streets, also has homes in centres including Hamilton and New Plymouth. It's no wonder it's so popular really, given that its menu with all the bells and whistles is enough to send even the most famished into a peaceful food coma – of the good kind of course. You might be the intolerant type – genuinely, as a result of food allergies, or just plain picky – either way, it doesn't matter because Mexico has your back. Want spicy snacks and sangria? Sorted. How about tasty tortillas and soft shell tacos? You got it. Add some specialities like quesadillas with exotic flavours, quirky salads and churros dripping in chocolate into the mix, and you've got yourself a stand out menu – but that's Mexico for you. It's got gastronomy down to a fine art.

CONCEIVED WITH LOVE, MADE WITH LOVE AND SERVED WITH LOVE WITH A SIDE OF HOT SAUCE JUST TO SPICE THINGS UP A LITTLE (OR A HECK OF A LOT) IT'S JUST ONE GIANT LOVE FEST AT MEXICO.

ICON ITS MENU WITH ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES IS ENOUGH TO SEND EVEN THE MOST FAMISHED INTO A PEACEFUL FOOD COMA – OF THE GOOD KIND OF COURSE.

Once you've nished crushing hard over the menu, spare some time to appreciate the décor – it really, really deserves your attention. Especially the replica stained glass window near the entrance, which is all kinds of rad. Looking around at the explosion of Dawn of the Dead colours, murals and literally hundreds of shoulder to shoulder framed images gracing the walls, it's fair to say the restaurant aesthetic could have been all wrong, but it is, in fact, all right – so, so right. It's taken a creative leaf out of the design book of its siblings based around New Zealand, but the Christchurch Mexico is still very much its own avour and like the menu, this avour is anything but vanilla. Conceived with love, made with love and served with love with a side of hot sauce just to spice things up a little (or a heck of a lot) it's just one giant love fest at Mexico. To learn more about the new kid on the block go to www.mexico.net.nz or better still, get to know it with your own eyes and belly. It's waiting for you seven days a week from noon until late, and wants to make a believer out of you. Oh, and if you can't bear the thought of spending time away from your beloved restaurant once it's closed its doors for the day, then never

fear, the famous hot sauce everyone goes bananas about also lives online. Its existence is all thanks to one Javier Carmona – Executive Chef for Mexico. Spinning all sorts of tales (which judging by the popularity of the sauce are no doubt true) about months of experimentation, mad watering eyes, bags of chilli that weigh more

than the average bear, and an excessive but necessary amount of taste-testing, Mexico proudly describes just what lengths it went to so you could have that sauce. It's probably worth wrapping your laughing gear around it if you haven't done so yet. Phone (03) 372 1486 or go to www.mexico.net.nz.

Following the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, we have repaired nearly 500 homes, helping Christchurch residents get on with their lives.

Opting out with iconstruct was the best decision we ever made! From the moment we contacted Ben to get repairs underway it was a stress-free and simple process. We were always well informed along the way and the fact that we were given a timeline before the work started was invaluable, especially when trying to organise our temporary accommodation. Nothing was a bother for Ben and the team, they were always very easy to contact and we even had some additional work done on our house at the same time. The process was far simpler than we could have imagined and the end result was fantastic.

ang & Olufsen is commemorating its 90th birthday with the The Love Affair Collection. The new exclusive collection consists of six carefully chosen iconic products in a new colour nuance called rose golden. The new colour matches the surge in the interest towards beautiful materials – especially rose gold, which is experiencing a renaissance in the jewellery industry. One of the most emotive aspects is its underlying meaning. While white gold represents friendship and yellow gold means fidelity, rose gold represents love and is therefore the ultimate inspiration for this collection. During the roaring 20s, Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen started their journey into technology when it was still an almost magical phenomenon, and with the accompanying flourish of Art Deco, it was clear that luxury, glamour and exuberance were at the heart of the time. Fast-forward 90 years and the company is pleased to launch a collection that truly captures the mood and style of the time, setting the stage for a love affair that could last the ages.

eLonghi’s innovative new Multifry appliance combines a low oil fryer and multi-cooker – you can create everything from risottos and stews to pizzas, cakes and pies. The revolutionary new appliance is so advanced it gained a Plus-X Best Product of the Year Award in the hot air fryer category in 2014. The German awards highlight the world’s best brands in a huge range of categories. So how does the DeLonghi Multifry perform cooking one of our Kiwi favourites - chips? DeLonghi marketing manager Davina Gray-Ebbett says it’s an extremely healthy cooking alternative. “You don’t need any additional oil at all for cooking frozen chips and only 14 ml of oil to cook a kilo of fresh potatoes.” DeLonghi says fresh potatoes cooked in the Multifry contain less fat at around 2.8 per cent. According to The Chip Group guidelines the frying oil chip shop industry standard is 28 per cent saturated fat and 1 per cent trans-fat. There are two DeLonghi Multifry models, the classic and the extra chef. RRPs $349.99 and $449.99

A 'picture perfect' outdoor space Ross Marriott has an office with an exceptional view. The stunning outdoor space outside his door was designed and constructed by Artworks Landscape. Ross and landscape architect Jennie van der Valk worked together on the design, with the construction completed by Artworks' talented team. “The outdoor space reflects Artworks unique flavour,” says Ross.

THE OUTDOOR SPACE REFLECTS ARTWORKS UNIQUE FLAVOUR AND WAS RECOGNISED LAST YEAR AT THE 2014 LANDSCAPE NEW ZEALAND AWARDS, RECEIVING GOLD FOR BOTH LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION AND HORTICULTURE FOR A COMMERCIAL PROPERTY. Jennie van der Valk and Ross Marriott “We challenge each other,” says Jayne, whose long history in sales, recruitment and human resources fits perfectly with her role as marketing manager. Ross says that Artworks Landscape's approach to design is a personal one, involving conversations with the clients about the type of outdoor space they want to create and how it will be used. “We create a picture of what their completed outdoor space will be,” says Ross, whose many years of working in the industry has given him a k een eye for design. Their construction record speaks for itself, with over 25 years of creating outdoor spaces

Showering perfection If showering is the only ten minutes of the day that you get to yourself, then you want it to be perfection…

M

ethven has developed a pioneering technology called Aurajet™, with a breathtaking new design that dees convention. Its breakthrough spray technology is designed to deliver superior spray coverage, more force, better nerve stimulation and ultimately, the world's most luxurious showering experience. Designed, engineered and manufactured in New Zealand since 1886, Methven's award-winning, showering technology comes with a lifetime guarantee. The company's expertise in hydrodynamics is acknowledged around the world and its latest innovation – which follows signicant research into consumer showering preferences – is no different, taking the science of showering to the next level. “We are so proud to announce the launch of Aurajet. Our engineers designed the new haloshaped showerhead so that hidden nozzles

generate individual jets of water that collide against precisely-angled surfaces, creating a stunning fan of luxuriously dense droplets,” says Methven Group CEO, David Baneld. “Consumer and customer reaction during testing around the world has been phenomenal,” he says. “With each hidden surface set at a different angle, we have been able to produce a wide, even shower spray with no gaps and enhanced droplet density. This is precision engineering genius,” he sa ys. Aurajet delivers up to 20% more total spray force* and double the water coverage on the skin than conventional showers – yet uses as little as nine litres of water per minute. Aurajet is available in a beautiful choice of face plate colours to match every bathroom. *20% more than a Methven Conventional shower

Building with a difference

When Ashley Padayachee and Jo-Anne Pon wanted to build on their 2801m2 section on the historic Karitane Hospital site in Cashmere's preferred lower slopes, they wanted to ensure they had the best builder for the job.

An architectural beauty “

W

e felt very vulnerable and naïve when it came to building,” JoAnne says. “So we put a lot of work into researching a builder which we felt comfortable with.” After doing their homework, the couple decided to go with local building firm D.J. Hewitt Builders, owned by Daryl and Tara Hewitt. “We had narrowed it down to about three to four companies, but we felt the most comfortable about working with Daryl from DJ Hewitt. We had the confidence he was going to do a really good job, would see the job from start to finish and would give us personal attention,” she says. “We didn't want to be just another number for a housing company.” The Karitane Drive property features five bedrooms, with open plan kitchen, dining and living space. A second living area is attached, with the ability to be closed off if needed.

A SPACIOUS 2.7 METRE STUD HEIGHT AND FULL HEIGHT WINDOWS BOTH UPSTAIRS AND DOWNSTAIRS CREATE A STRONG SENSE OF SPACE.

Proud to support D.J. Hewitt Builders Ltd

Polished concrete flooring is warm to the touch, thanks to a hydronic central heating system driven by a heat pump, and double glazing ensures the family home will stay toasty throughout winter. A spacious 2.7 metre stud height and full height windows both upstairs and downstairs create a strong sense of space, while the ability to open the sliding doors lends itself to a strong indoor/outdoor flow. The exterior features a large covered outdoor space, garage and swimming pool. Rockcote cladding has been painted white, making this architectural beauty, designed by O'Neil Architecture, stand out. “We are really pleased with the finished product.” For more information on D.J. Staged houses: quicker sales, premium prices When your home hits the market, it’s got to look the part – warm, comfortable and inviting – because, let’s face it, when it comes to selling, first impressions really do count.

M

other and daughter team Jess Blakely and Viv Bradbury have been dressing homes for more than three years now, after being approached by a friend in real estate familiar with their ability to transform spaces. “My husband and I had moved four times in five years,” Viv explains. “As soon as we had renovated a place it would sell.” “I had twins that had just started school and I needed a challenge,” Jess adds. “We both love fabrics, colours and accessories, so it was the perfect opportunity for us to transform our passions into a business.” House dressing – or staging as it’s commonly referred to – involves furnishing a house with furniture, accessories and artworks, capturing the prospective buyer’s imagination and, of course, their desire to buy. “The goal is to sell the house faster, for a premium price,” Viv explains. Certainly the statistics would agree. A staged house sells, on average, 17% higher than an un-staged house according to the US Housing and Urban Development. “We specialise in a French, classic look that feels warm, inviting and homely,” Jess says.

A STAGED HOUSE SELLS, ON AVERAGE, 17% HIGHER THAN AN UN-STAGED HOUSE

Whether you’re after a whole-house transformation or partial makeover to prepare for sale, or perhaps you want to make your own home more inviting, Jess and Viv can help. “Nothing we have staged has sat on the market and we take a lot of pride in that,” Viv says. Despite both living in Ohoka, Viv and Jess can travel throughout Christchurch, working with a number of real estate agents and private owners to stage their properties for sale or create a warm and comfortable space to live in. So instead of putting that cold, echoing house on the market, get in touch with Viv and Jess to see what the design duo can do for you. Clever new concept in design Just as each family is different, so are the homes that they live in. This shared idea is the simple premise behind Pitch Design & Build, which brings together fresh ideas in design and construction.

W

“We've e've taken a whole new approach to design and build,” says architectural designer Barry Connor of Barry Connor Design, who alongside builder Anthony Wheeler, Managing Director of Wheelers, makes up Pitch Build and Design. It was a similar view on what housing can be and through working on joint projects, that brought Barry and Anthony together at Pitch, with their intention to provide individually designed homes for all budgets. “We really care about what we do – giving people affordable housing,” says Barry. “We believe people deserve a great service and product.” There are no standard house plans at Pitch. Instead they have created what Barry and Anthony refer to as 'conversation starters' – a selection of beautiful homes whose styles can be emulated and adjusted to suit individual client's needs. The clever designs cover a range of budgets by reducing a home's footprint and instead using key features to provide a feeling of spaciousness. The designs are also Homestar© rated energy efficient homes, with Pitch aiming for a

Anthony and Barry 7-star level for every design. “We are very hands on,” says Anthony, with all clients meeting with Barry and Anthony themselves to discuss their needs. A visit to the planned site provides more information, with Barry saying that creating a home to capture the sun is paramount to his designs. Each house is then priced individually by their inhouse Quantity Surveyors. Pitch provides a total build solution with their own teams of in-house sub-trades, with this

service providing ease of communication and reduced stress for their clients. “It gives us great control over the quality,” says Anthony, who oversees the construction side of the work, all of which has the Master Builder guarantee. Take a look at how Pitch Build and Design create their homes at www.pitchdb.co.nz, visit them on facebook or contact Barry and Anthony on (03) 928 2460 for more information.

Background ambience Dulux's interior design team lead by Creative Consultant Bree Leech paired with fashion designers Alexandra and Genevieve Smart recently to style a Melbourne home, bringing to life the colours, textures and mood evoked by Ginger & Smart's Autumn Winter 2015 collection entitled Arcadia. The styling of the home's light-filled kitchen draws on a softer colour palette showcased in the Eclipse print from the collection, which is replicated in sweeter shades of Dulux China Doll Quarter and Cupcake Rose. Accents of copper through the use of Dulux Stellar Glow Design Metallic and fixtures reference Ginger & Smart's signature Rose Gold hardware and contribute to a feeling of luxury. An abstract interpretation of the palm frond found in the Eclipse print cuts through the walls of the kitchen at unexpected angles in Dulux Companion to accentuate the architectural design of the space as well as demonstrate a creative and easy method to create feature points using paint.

Inspired by the Arcadia woman, who exudes a sense of harmony balanced with an innate feeling of strength, the living room features simple and soft-shaped furniture and accessories that juxtapose with the hard lines of built in shelves painted in Dulux's commanding blueblack shade, Metalise. The entry walls to the living room echo the Afterglow print in the Arcadia collection through a speckled paint pattern applied to the walls using a fluid technique that progresses the colours from a soft white, Serena Quarter, through to ocean greens and blues: Rockpool, Sky Chase, Rockabilly and Sailing Safari. Classic cars in demand International auctioneers Coys achieved outstanding results of some £3 million in sales at their Spring Classics auction in London recently.

O

ne of the star lots of the auction was the last original Aston Martin DBS to come off the production line, which was found in a barn in Surrey, and sold for £43,240. The car had been sitting in a barn since 1980 and was discovered by Chris Routledge, the Managing Partner of the auction house, who said: "A great ending to a fantastic story. The car has been sold to an Aston Martin collector who was so excited about having the opportunity to restore the very last production DBS that he almost started to do the work in the auction room.” Other important cars auctioned included a 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (£158,600), a 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera 2 RS Lightweight (£157,480), a 1935 Rolls-Royce 20/25 3-Position Drophead Coupe by HJ Mulliner (£147,400) and a 1959 Maserati OSCA Tipo 'J' Formula Junior (£147,400). Coys Spring Classics also featured a 1967 Maserati Quattroporte, formerly the property of Princess Aly Khan, latterly known as Lady Camrose. The car, which recently visited its original home at Eaton Square, sold for £45,480. Other highlights of the classic car auction included a 1968 Jaguar E-Type Series 1.5 Roadster (£122,760), a 1955 Bentley R –Type Drophead Coupe by Park Ward (£110,440), a 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL (£107,080) and a 1971 Aston Martin DBS V8 (£88,040).

New supercar a stunner

By Ben Selby

Ford has stunned everyone at the recent Detroit Autoshow with the unveiling of a new GT Supercar.

Images: NetCarShow.com

W

hile the GT bears some resemblance to the Ferrari's ballistic LaFerrari, such as the doors, taillight cluster and countless ducts and scoops, the design mostly seems to exude blue collar muscle, a clear throw back to the previous GT and the original Le Mans winning GT40. New 20-inch alloys house four carbon ceramic brakes and a rear diffuser and adjustable rear wing complete the ensemble. The body itself will be made predominantly of carbon fibre with lashings of aluminium,

housing both the engine and pushrod suspension. Ford also claim the new GT will have one of the best power to weight ratios of any production car. Expecting V8 grunt? Not this time. A midmounted 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost engine is rumoured to produce in excess of 430kW. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox will provide the get up and go. No word yet on performance figures, though Ford themselves say the new GT will have more than enough poke while still providing new levels of efficiency.

Inside, the two-seat GT offers what Ford calls a "purposeful" interior, which can be accessed via the scissor like doors. The previous GT began production back in 2004 and the new car will be produced in limited numbers from late next year, marking the 50th anniversary of Ford's infamous 1-2-3 finish with the original GT40 at Le Mans in 1966. While the new car will be sold globally, the chance of seeing one next to the new Mustang in NZ Ford showrooms in the future is pretty slim.

Add some European style to your life There's a certain something about European cars, an indefinable something the French call je ne sais quoi and now, thanks to Christchurch European, the city is home to one of New Zealand's largest and most diverse selections of European vehicles.

E

stablished in 2005, Christchurch European has the city's largest range of Europe's finest brands, from the very popular Range Rover/Land Rover range, to Audi Q7s and A4 convertibles, Jaguars, Minis, BMWs and even now the odd exotic McLaren or Porsche, ensuring there is something for everyone. “We have about 180 cars currently in stock here,” explains Christchurch European's Niki Mills. “By not being aligned with any one brand, we're able to provide up-front, impartial advice regarding the vehicle to suit your needs, with the range to meet those requirements. Customers can try all the European brands in one go!” Importantly customer service wise, with their own on-site specialist European vehicle mechanic and auto-electrician, they can also tend to customers' cars on site. With the recent strength of the NZ dollar, Christchurch European offers the opportunity to purchase high-option European vehicles at significant savings compared to similar vehicles sold new in NZ.

So if you can't find what you're looking for on the daily updated website, with Christchurch European's access to Worldwide Supply, they may just be the ones to find it. “We have a good relationship with a number of overseas dealerships, which enables us to source cars which are hard to get here and regularly import to order.” Visit the striking Christchurch European showroom at 511 Blenheim Road (the southern end), phone (03) 366 8328, email sales@christchurcheuropean.co.nz or visit www.christchurcheuropean.co.nz.

Mental. This is one of many words you could use to describe the latest supercar on steroids offering from Lamborghini. Revealed at the recent Geneva Auto Show, what you see here is the Aventador LP750/4 SV.

W

hile Lambo's maddest car to date has to be the limited run Veneno hypercar, the new Aventador SV is certainly up there, making it the most extreme Aventador to date. The SV name stands for Super Veloce (which in English means Super Fast), is steeped in Lamborghini history and only used on the most hardcore variants of their model range. To create the SV, Lamborghini shed 50kg of weight from the standard Aventador. The extensive use of carbon ď€ bre on new door panels, rockers, the new rear wing and the ď€ xed air intakes is obvious. The interior features new sports bucket seats and excludes an infotainment system, carpets and certain noise insulation parts.

The 6.5 litre, naturally aspirated V12 engine in the Lamborghini Aventador has been redesigned for the Super Veloce and equipped with a completely new lightweight exhaust system. Improving the engine responsiveness of the original Aventador, maximum power output now reaches 552 kW at 8,400 rpm. The maximum torque is 690 Nm at 5,500 rpm, with an increased maximum engine speed of 8,500 rpm. The SV will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a blistering 2.8 seconds and powers on to reach a top speed of more than 350 km/h. New electromechanical Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS) variably adapts the steering ratio to road speed and to the dynamic mode selected. This will ensure even greater stability at high speed.
